Topics Covered:

Training covers the following:
  • Boating safety
  • Sailing theory and terminology
  • "Rules of the road"
  • Knots and line handling
  • Nautical chart basics
  • Navigational Aids
  • Handling difficult situations/emergencies

Trainers
On-the-water courses are taught by club captains who volunteer their time. Most have at least five years of recreational sailing experience. All have sailed the Chesapeake Bay in the club boats for at least a year.

Boats
On-the-water training is done on the club's two sailboats located in Eastport, MD - Muller Marine, 616 Third St. Annapolis, MD 21403.

Prior Experience
No prior experience is necessary. Beginners will be taught the basics. Experienced students use the instruction as a refresher and also a way to become familiar with the boats and learn specific techniques and procedures required by the club.

Swimming Skills
Non-swimmers are required to wear a personal flotation device (PFD) while on the boat. Basic PFDs are available on the boats to use for free, however you may choose to bring your own.

After the Class - Mentoring
After passing the class, students are assigned a "mentor" with whom they can go on additional sail outings (at their cost). These mentoring sails are intended to provide students with guided and supervised practice until they become confident and proficient sailors. Students can coordinate and schedule mentoring sails directly with the mentors.

Captain Exam
After sufficient mentoring, practice and experience, a student can request a captain exam from the club's Sailing Master, in which the student will be tested for both practical sailing skills and knowledge as well as boat-specific knowledge and crew leadership ability. Students who pass the exam can become club captains, chartering and skippering cruises while taking on additional responsibilities such as performing boat maintenance and paying additional dues and fees.
